Comparing Home Security Systems

DIY, professionally installed, or monitored? The honest tradeoffs of each.

By Lucky Finds · Updated September 26, 2026

The first fork is installation: DIY systems arrive in a box and you place the sensors — they're cheaper, moveable, and can go month-to-month on monitoring. Professionally installed systems cost more up front and often carry contracts, but the equipment is integrated and there's a human responsible for placement and setup.

The second fork is monitoring: self-monitored means alerts come to your phone and you decide the response. Professionally monitored means a center dispatches emergency services when an alarm fires — useful when you travel or when you might not see an alert. Some DIY brands offer both, with monitoring as an optional subscription.

Watch the subscription fine print: some cameras only record or notify with a paid plan, and some lock features like person detection behind it. If you want no monthly fees at all, look for local storage (microSD or a hub) instead of cloud-only recording. Whichever you choose, place cameras to cover entries, keep firmware updated, and use unique passwords — a security system is only as strong as its weakest login.
