How GPS Pet Trackers Work

GPS collars, escape alerts, virtual fences — and why an AirTag isn't the same thing.

Dedicated pet GPS trackers combine a GPS receiver with a cellular connection, so you can see your pet's location live from your phone — almost anywhere.

Common features:

  • Live tracking — real-time position updates.
  • Escape alerts — notifications if your pet leaves a safe zone.
  • Activity tracking — daily movement stats, similar to a fitness tracker.
  • Virtual fences — geofenced zones that trigger alerts.

The catch: real-time cellular tracking requires a subscription. Device size and battery life vary by model — check a tracker's specs for your pet's weight before buying.

A note on AirTags: an AirTag has no cellular tracking. It only updates its location when another Apple device is nearby. It's a budget backup for a collar — not a replacement for a real-time GPS tracker if your pet is an escape artist.

Trackers don't replace ID tags, microchips, or secure fencing.
