Pet Insurance Terms Explained
Deductibles, reimbursement, annual limits, waiting periods, and pre-existing conditions.

Policy terms decide what a plan actually pays — more than the headline price.
- Deductible — what you pay out of pocket per year (or per condition, depending on the plan) before reimbursement starts. Lower deductibles raise premiums.
- Reimbursement rate — the percentage of covered costs paid back (commonly 70–90%).
- Annual limit — the most a plan pays per year. Some plans have no per-incident caps.
- Waiting period — days between enrollment and coverage starting. Accidents and illnesses can have different waiting periods.
- Pre-existing conditions — conditions noted before enrollment are typically excluded everywhere; some plans distinguish curable vs incurable.
- Direct vet pay — a few insurers pay the vet at checkout so you don't front the full bill.
