What an HVAC Technician Handles (and What They Don't)
A quick map of HVAC work — repair, maintenance, replacement — and who handles fuel supply instead.

HVAC technicians handle the systems that heat and cool your home: furnaces, air conditioners, heat pumps, and the thermostats and ducts connected to them. Repair covers systems that run but misbehave — no heat, weak airflow, strange noises. Maintenance is the seasonal tune-up that keeps efficiency up and catches worn parts early.
Replacement is its own conversation. A technician can quote a replacement system, but the decision deserves multiple written estimates and some homework on efficiency ratings. A replacement is one of the largest single home expenses — take your time unless the system is dead in extreme weather.
What HVAC pros don't do: chimney and venting work beyond their connection points (that's a chimney sweep), gas line runs to a new appliance location (that's a gas-fitter or plumber in many areas), and insulation (that's an insulation contractor). Ask any tech who works on gas equipment to show their license for that work.
