What to Ask Before Hiring a Moving Company

Start with the estimate structure: binding (the price holds unless your inventory changes) or non-binding (can move with actual weight). Get it in writing, and ask whether it includes packing materials, stairs, or long carries — those are the classic add-on fees. For interstate moves, ask for their US DOT number and check it.
Insurance and protection are not the same thing. Released-value protection is minimal coverage included by default; full-value protection costs more and covers replacement. Neither is homeowner's insurance — ask what happens if something breaks, and get it in the contract. Also ask about subcontracting: some companies you hire hand your move to a different crew entirely.
Practical checks: get the pickup and delivery windows in writing, confirm cancellation terms and deposit refundability, and read reviews for damage claims and resolution, not just friendliness. If you're moving long-distance, a moving marketplace that collects several licensed quotes can be a faster way to compare all of this side by side.
