What to Buy for a New Puppy

The category-by-category starter list — food, crate, leash, ID, training, wellness.

By Lucky Finds · Updated September 26, 2026

You don't need everything — just the right categories. (Lucky Finds' New Pet Starter Checklist builds this list for you.)

  1. Food & bowls — whatever the breeder or shelter fed, plus food and water bowls.
  2. Crate & bed — a crate with a divider they can grow into, plus a washable bed.
  3. Collar, leash, ID — a flat collar, a 4–6 foot leash, and an ID tag. Microchip registration too.
  4. Vet visit & wellness — schedule a checkup, vaccinations, and flea & tick prevention.
  5. Training — puppy classes or an online program; start house training day one.
  6. Toys — a few options: chew, fetch, and puzzle.
  7. Pet insurance — most plans enroll puppies from around 8 weeks old.

Ask your veterinarian for feeding and health guidance — and enjoy it; puppies are a lot.
