When to Call an Electrician (and When Not to DIY)
Electrical work is the category where DIY boundaries matter most. Here's the line.

Call an electrician for anything behind the wall, anything involving the panel, and anything with a symptom you can't explain: breakers that keep tripping, flickering lights, outlets that went dead, or any burning smell. These symptoms can indicate wiring or load problems that you can't see — and shouldn't guess at.
Safe DIY electrical work is limited to plug-in and battery devices: swapping lamps, testing outlets with a plug-in tester, changing lightbulbs, and resetting breakers. Even outlet and switch replacement, which looks simple online, involves live wiring questions that vary by home.
Never DIY: panel work, new circuits, anything in wet locations, and any repair involving aluminum wiring or cloth-insulated wiring in older homes. If a breaker trips repeatedly, don't keep resetting it — find out why.
