Wildlife Removal vs. Pest Control: What's the Difference?

A raccoon in the attic and ants in the kitchen go to two different professionals. Here's who handles what.

Pest control companies handle insects and small infestations: ants, roaches, spiders, fleas, and — with specialists — bed bugs or termites. Wildlife removal handles larger animals: raccoons, squirrels, bats, birds, opossums, and snakes. Rats and mice sit in between — most pest control companies treat rodents, and wildlife companies handle them when the entry point is a structural one.

The bigger difference is the method. Wildlife professionals work within state and local rules about trapping and relocation — many animals can't legally be trapped and moved without a permit, and some, like bats, have protected seasons. A pest spray won't evict a raccoon, and sealing the entry too early can trap animals inside, which is why exclusion usually follows removal.

If you hear scratching, thumping, or chirping from a ceiling or wall, start with a wildlife assessment. Droppings and chewed food packaging in the kitchen — start with pest control.
